The Uzbekistan Teachers of English Association (UzTEA) has been selected as the recipient of the IATEFL Projects Grant 2026, marking a significant milestone in the association’s ongoing mission to strengthen English language teaching across Uzbekistan.
This recognition comes under the IATEFL Projects scheme, a global initiative designed to empower teaching associations to implement impactful, community-driven projects. With grants of up to £1,500, the scheme supports practical and scalable interventions that enhance teaching quality, promote inclusion, and engage educators particularly those in under-resourced contexts.
A Project Rooted in Regional Impact
UzTEA’s winning initiative, titled:
“English in the Regions: AI-Enhanced Peer Mentoring Circles for Vocational English Teachers in Rural Uzbekistan,”
addresses a critical gap in professional development opportunities for teachers working in regional and vocational education settings.
The project introduces peer mentoring circles enhanced by AI-supported tools, enabling teachers to:
- Collaborate regularly within structured communities of practice
- Access adaptive teaching resources tailored to vocational contexts
- Strengthen pedagogical and digital competencies
- Share localized solutions to common classroom challenges
Focusing on rural educators, the initiative directly contributes to educational equity, ensuring that teachers outside major urban centers benefit from innovation and continuous professional growth.
IATEFL’s Role: Enabling Grassroots Transformation
The International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) plays a pivotal role in advancing ELT globally through its Projects funding scheme. The program is intentionally designed to support associations in countries with developing educational ecosystems, aligning with the United Nations Human Development Index criteria.
Successful proposals such as UzTEA’s demonstrate:
- Clear, achievable objectives with measurable impact
- Broad community benefit for teachers and learners
- Transparent and realistic budget planning
- Collaborative implementation involving multiple stakeholders
- Defined strategies for evaluation and dissemination
Over the years, IATEFL has supported a diverse range of initiatives worldwide from ICT training for teachers in Nepal and Bangladesh, to community-based English learning programs in Cuba, and multilingual teaching strategy platforms in India. These projects share a common thread: localized solutions with scalable impact.
Building on a Global Legacy of Impact
UzTEA now joins a distinguished cohort of past recipients, including:
- 2025 – APC-ELI (Cuba): KINSHIP: Learning English in the family
- TESOL Bangladesh (2024): Empowering female teachers in underserved communities through ICT and professional development
- FORTELL India (2023): Promoting multilingual teaching strategies through digital platforms
- NELTA Nepal (2022): Enhancing ICT and leadership skills among marginalized female teachers
- ANELTA Angola (2020): Supporting English clubs and leadership development in schools
Each initiative reflects IATEFL’s commitment to practical innovation, inclusivity, and teacher-led change principles that are strongly embedded in UzTEA’s approach.
Looking Ahead: From Implementation to Global Sharing
The announcement of the 2026 grant was made during the IATEFL Annual Conference, reinforcing the project’s visibility within the global ELT community. As implementation progresses, UzTEA plans to:
- Document and evaluate outcomes systematically
- Share best practices through regional and international platforms
- Contribute insights to the wider ELT field, particularly on AI integration in low-resource environments
This project also aligns with UzTEA’s broader strategic priorities, including its upcoming 30th anniversary initiatives, where teacher development, innovation, and international collaboration remain central themes.
A Collective Achievement
The success of this proposal reflects not only institutional capacity but also the collective effort of educators, partners, and mentors who continue to shape Uzbekistan’s ELT landscape.
As UzTEA embarks on this new chapter, the association reinforces its commitment to:
- Empowering teachers at all levels
- Bridging regional disparities in education
- Leveraging technology responsibly and effectively
- Contributing to global professional dialogue
Through the support of IATEFL, this project stands as a clear example of how targeted funding, local expertise, and collaborative design can drive meaningful and sustainable change in education.
